Experience and qualifications.
Derek Hance is a retired Police Officer who served over 30 years with
the Metropolitan Police Service. For the Last 12 years of service he worked
as a full time Accident Investigator based in the South East Area of London.
For his final two years he was the Senior Accident Investigator and, in
addition to conducting his own case studies, was in charge of six full
time Accident Investigators and responsible for the quality control of
their work. He has been awarded four commendations for his professionalism
in accident investigation.
Over the years he has been involved in thousands of fatal and serious
injury road accident enquires. Many cases have resulted in Derek giving
evidence as an expert in Crown Courts, Magistrates Courts, Coroner’s
Courts and other enquiry tribunals. He has been commended a number of
times by Judges and Coroners for his professionalism as an expert witness.
Derek commenced his studies in Accident Investigation soon after joining
Traffic Patrol in 1987 and over the following years gained numerous technical
qualifications in accident investigation; the examination of vehicles
involved in accidents; and associated disciplines, which include*:
- City & Guilds Certificate in Road Accident Investigation for
Police Officers.
- City & Guilds Certificate in Advanced Vehicle Technology and
Examination Techniques for Police Officers.
- City & Guilds Certificate in Tachograph Examination and Calibration,
and Chart Analysis Level III.
- In 1993 Derek commenced his studies with the Middlesex University
(Department of Work Based Learning Studies) and in 1996 graduated as
Master of Arts (with Distinction) in Accident Investigation.
Derek has full Membership status with the Institute of Road Transport
Engineers, the Society of Operations Engineers, and the Institute of
Traffic Accident Investigators and is registered with the Council for
the Registration of Forensic Practitioners.
